Events Archive 'Kicking the habit'
with Leamington FC for No Smoking Day
Saturday 4th March saw Leamington FC play local rivals Stratford Town FC at the New Windmill Ground near Leamington with a smoke free twist at half-time. Local junior players took on a giant cigarette in goal for a special penalty shoot-out to mark 'No Smoking Day' 2006. The football club gave us an incredibly warm welcome and 'Big Cig' mingled with the crowd, handing out stickers to fans at the match.
An advice stand was set up where Denise Milnes and Claire Ford, Tobacco Control Co-ordinators were on hand to discuss the purpose of No Smoking Day, the effects of smoking and support available to stop smoking. CO monitoring was also offered to smokers who approached the stand.
Banners advertising the NHS Smoking helpline were displayed around the ground. Posters were displayed around the pitch and clubhouse with No Smoking Day beer mats also being used in the clubhouse. The highlight of the match was a penalty shoot-out at half-time, 16 children supporters, from both teams, were invited to pitch their football skills against “Big Cig” in a penalty shoot out. Special thanks go to Tom Milnes who braved the cold and children to do a splendid job as 'Big Cig'.
Some of the children who took part Trying to save another one! The Leamington Observer and Courier ran press articles and photographs about the event and an article appeared in the Match-day programme. For more information on Leamington FC, please click here.
