How to Stop Smoking - Hints and Tips
1. Set a quit date
Choose a day that will be easiest for you. Let people know.
2. Plan for your quit day
Get rid of all smoking materials: ashtrays, cigarettes, and lighters. Think about what you will be doing on that day. How are you going to manage times when you would have smoked?
3. Find help
Besides the medication and your GP surgery, ask friends, family, colleagues for support. Perhaps find a “buddy” who is also quitting and encourage each other.
4. See yourself as a non-smoker
If you are offered cigarettes, say “I don’t smoke” rather than “I’m trying to give up”.
5. Remind yourself of your reasons for stopping
6. A Non-smoker
Once you are over the first day, tell yourself you are now a non-smoker. If people offer you cigarettes, tell them why you have stopped and how important it is to you.
7. Change your habits
Think about when and where you smoke and work out ways of avoiding the temptation. For example, if you always smoke after a meal, get up straight away and do something else.
8. Plan to take up new activities
Find things you can do either before your operation or soon after; learn a new skill, do some exercise. Get support from a friend or partner.
9. Find other ways to relax
If you used smoking to relax, find other ways of relaxing; a bath, sitting with your feet up, breathing deeply, just taking time out.
10. Reward yourself
Plan treats. Go out. Visit the Smoke Free Pubs section of our website by clicking here, to plan a smoke free meal or drink...
