12 March 2008
The 2008 No Smoking Day took place on Wednesday 12 March and was the 25th No Smoking Day. This year’s campaign theme was ‘The Great No Smoking Day Challenge’ and was an acknowledgement of the really tough challenge that quitting smoking is. No Smoking Day in 2009 will take place on Wednesday 11 March The Great No Smoking Day Challenge helps individual participants become part of a bigger challenge and a national event. But it’s designed also to support group quit attempts, and has been received enthusiastically by stop smoking groups that plan to integrate the challenge theme into their activities. Part of the 2008 theme was to encourage smokers to just stay focused on a manageable target – the first week. Of course, we hope many will go on to live a life free of tobacco, and we’ll do all we can to help them achieve that goal. The week-long challenge will help quitters develop the confidence to that they can succeed. It will also drive many smokers to take advantage of the help and support that’s available to quit for good, and text messages and emails will be used through the week to encourage them to do just that. Warwickshire Stop Smoking Service operates through doctor’s surgeries, pharmacists and drop in clinics in the county, providing regular support appointments over the first few weeks of quitting, along with a prescription for nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum, etc). The service is free and smokers who use it are four times more likely to succeed in stopping than trying to stop without help.
